Like many countries the Netherlands used to struggle from overpopulation of its prisons. Nowadays, most of these previously overpopulated prisons are closing. The Netherlands achieved this through decriminalisation of drugs and a sentencing approach that focusses on rehabilitation rather than isolation of convicts.
